Abels, Richard P., Alfred the Great: War, Kingship and Culture in Anglo-Saxon England
Longmans, ISBN: 0582040477

This biography of Alfred the Great, king of the West Saxons (871-899), combines a sensitive reading of the primary sources with a careful evaluation of the most recent scholarly research on the history and archaeology of ninth-century England. Alfred emerges from the pages of this biography as a great warlord, an effective and inventive ruler, and a passionate scholar whose piety and intellectual curiosity led him to sponsor a cultural and spiritual renaissance. Alfred's victories on the battlefield and his sweeping administrative innovations not only preserved his native Wessex from viking conquest, but began the process of political consolidation that would culminate in the creation of the kingdom of England.

Costa, Ricardo da, A Guerra na Idade Média - um estudo da mentalidade de cruzada na Península Ibérica
Paratodos

It’s a study about the permanence of Crusader’s mentality in the chivalrous Iberian imaginary during the process of reconquering Portugal. The sources — utilized in a comparative form — include two chronicles: a Conquista de Lisboa de 1147 (The conquest of Lisbon of 1147) and a Batalha do Salado de 1340 (The Battle of Salado of 1340), this last one a narrative contained in the Livro de Linhagens do Conde D. Pedro (Dom Pedro’s Lineage Book). This Crusader’s mentality is reread historically through the chivalrous Iberian imaginary, having as a model the Libro del Ordem de Caballería (Book of the Order of Knights), written by the Catalan preacher Ramon Llull. Both the Lulism and the knightly model that he helped to structure are evidences of the permanence of a Crusader mentality in Portugal. The Christian and Crusader symbol that is present throughout the XII until the XIV centuries in Portugal is the Cruz do Santo Lenho do Marmelar (Marmelar’s Cross of the Lord’s Holly Wood), a Christologian object present both in the Conquest of Lisbon and in the Battle of Salado.  Click here for more information.
