De Re Militari Business Meeting (2002)

De Re Militari held its annual business meeting on May 4, 2002, during the International Congress on Medieval Studies, held at the University of Western Michigan. About thirty members were in attendance.  The agenda of the meeting was as follows:

1. Elections

It was decided that the society would have two elected positions, namely for President and for Secretary-Treasurer, with their terms lasting three years.  By unanimous decision, Stephen Morillo was chosen as President, and Carroll Gillmor was elected Secretary-Treasurer.  There were also several appointed positions established:

Conference Co-ordinator: Kelly DeVries

Editor of The Journal of Medieval Military History: Bernard S. Bachrach

Associate Editors: Clifford J. Rogers and Kelly DeVries

Publisher Liaison: Susan Dyskstra-Poel, Boydell & Brewer

Website Administrator: Peter Konieczny

2. Membership Fee

With the upcoming launch of The Journal of Medieval Military History, it was decided that De Re Militari required a membership fee, so that members would be able to receive a copy of the journal at a reduced price.  The fee has been set an annual rate of $35 (U.S.), with the first $30 going to cover the cost of each member's journal (the price of the journal for non-members will be around $80-90).  The remaining $5 will be given over to the Society, and this will be used to pay for the Verbruggen Prize, and for the annual costs for domain-name rights for www.deremilitari.org

De Re Militari dues will be processed at the University of Utah Credit Union, which will have an account administered by Carroll Gillmor.

3. De Re Militari sessions at the International Congress on Medieval Studies

Several decisions were made about how future sessions will be held at the Congress.  First, the speaker for the Special (or Plenary Session) Session of De Re Militari will be named two years in advance.  Stephen Morillo will give the Special Session in 2003, while Richard W. Kaeuper will be the speaker in 2004.

It was also decided that the number of speakers for the De Re Militari general sessions be limited to three per session.  Lastly, it was decided that one of our sessions be given over to Jay Roberts and the students of Olathe North High School, who will be building and displaying a replica of Roman ballista.

4. Other News

Reports were given by Paul Gans, Clifford Rogers and Peter Konieczny about some of the activities of the Society, namely for the Verbruggen Book Prize, The Journal of Military History, and the website.

Finally, Val Eads, on behalf of the New York Military Affairs Symposium, presented Bernard S. Bachrach the Arthur Goodzeit award for book of the year, for his work Early Carolingian Warfare: Prelude to Empire.   See their website, www.nymas.org for more details.
