De Re Militari 2006 Business Meeting Minutes
1. Website: Steven Walton Peter Konieczny, unable to attend, presented the following two points via Steve: 1. for a small annual fee, de re militari has unlimited space on the website 2. Peter has been scanning older documents, translations, and contributions from foreign scholars - Walton explained that Peter has been paying for scanning services and that De re militari should purchase a scanner for our needs. The price of the scanner is about $300.00 - Oxford University Press has a great deal of material and has granted us permission to scan the items for our website - Peter suggested that De re militari tape the Kalamazoo sessions and place them on the website; he also advised that we place back issues of JMMH on line with a five year blackout; this is standard operating procedure for most journals provided we obtain permission from Boydell and Brewer - a formal motion was passed to buy Peter a Hewlett-Packard scanner for $300.00 2. Book reviews: Steven Walton - reminded the audience of a Roundtable discussion of E publishing Thursday evening 3. Kalamazoo sessions: Kelly Devries This year we had one session less than last year; Kelly will be applying for the same number of sessions for next year. - Bernie Bachrach suggested three themes for future sessions: focus on a recent book, teaching military history, the future of military history - Kelly pointed out other organizations that sponsor conferences 1. Society for military history: Kelly will put a session together for this 2. Conference on peace and war at Barnard College 3. Leeds conference has slots for military history; these can be organized through the Royal Armouries - Bernie advised consulting the programs of other medieval conferences such as the Medieval Academy and Sewanee for military history topics - Bernie noted that John Haldon has formed a Byzantine logistics group. Professor Haldon will be the JMMH’s speaker next year. Bernie also mentioned that there is a German working group on military history and an archaeological group working on Avar graves and Carolingian weapons in Vienna - Kelly is presently taking donations for speakers two years hence 4. Report on Journal: Stephen Morillo - volume four is set and is in press; this issue will contain Bernie’s response to Verbruggen, an article by Russ Mitchell on archery, and another article on cowardice. - JMMH has received several good articles for volume five including one by Chris Allmand - JMMH is turning down more than 50% of the articles submitted - Kelly is especially interested in documents and has received one by Father Burns on crossbow bolts; Kelly also has received another document-based article on war dogs. - JMMH also encourages small notes. - JMMH has a rolling admissions policy, so that once an issue is filled up, the editors start the next. The page limit for the journal has been set at 240-250 pages, and the editors do like longer articles - Peter Clifford and Caroline Palmer are the editors for Boydell and Brewer; Susan Dykstra-Poel is the secretary for membership and will work with Carroll Gillmor in maintaining accurate membership lists. - Mr. Clifford asked when should the journal appear.
