Safe Sanctuaries: Security and Defence in Anglo-Scottish Border Churches 1290-1690 By Christopher J. Brooke John Donald Publishing, 2000 Between 1990 and 1999, 533 churches and church sites in the Anglo-Scottish border region, that lie within the six historic border Marches, were assessed for their defensible characteristics using both archaeological analysis and historical research. Of these, 96 were found to have features, or records, characteristic of defence, above average security, or military use. Many others probably existed but physical evidence has been effaced and documentary sources are silent on a large number of churches on both sides of the border. The results of this survey can be found in a recently published book by Christopher J. Brooke, entitled Safe Sanctuaries: Security and Defence in Anglo-Scottish Border Churches 1290-1690. This book is published by John Donald, an imprint of Birlinn Limited. For more information about this book, please see Dr. Brooke's website (which includes photographs), as well as this book review.
