Eastern Approaches to Byzantium
Papers from the Thirty-third Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies, University of Warwick, Coventry, March 1999

Edited by Anthony Eastmond

The Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies has published nine volumes to date, showcasing the papers of its annual Spring Symposia.  In this latest volume, Eastern Approaches to Byzantium, seventeen papers are published that deal with the eastern frontier of the Byzantine Empire.  Georgians, Armenians, Seljuqs and Turkomans are among the peoples who interacted with the Byzantines.  For military historians, two articles are of interest: Jean-Claude Cheynet, "La conception militaire de la frontiere orientale (IXe-XIIIe siecle)", and

Catherine Holmes, 'How the East was won' in the reign of Basil II (PDF file)
