I want to become a member of De Re Militari.  What do I need to do?

De Re Militari welcomes anyone who wants to be a member of our society, regardless if you are an academic or just interested in medieval military history.  Our annual membership fee is $35 (US), most of which goes to cover your copy of The Journal of Medieval Military History (published by Boydell & Brewer).  Click here for the membership form.

When is the next volume of the Journal of Medieval Military History going to be available?

Volume 4 (2006) has just been published, and volume 5 will be ready by late-2007.

I want buy copies of either of the first two volumes of the Journal.  How can I do this?

The easiest, and cheapest way to get the journal is to fill out our membership form, which includes an option to purchase volumes 1, 2 and 3.  The cost will be $35 US each, which is significantly less than you can get from book stores or online retailers.

I think I sent in a membership due already, but I have not received a copy of the journal.  Who should I contact?

Send us an email at deremilitari@hotmail.com and we will pass it on to the appropriate person.

Does De Re Militari have meetings?

Yes, we do hold an annual meeting during the International Congress on Medieval Studies, which is held each year in early May at Western Michigan University.  We encourage all members to attend, but if you cannot, you can still read the minutes of these meetings on our website.

Besides this website and the Journal, what else does your society do?

De Re Militari was organized to give a home for all the historians and scholars interested in medieval warfare.  We will help to bring all these people together, at conferences and other events, and in developing new books and other materials.  We also give out the Verbruggen Prize, an annual award for the best book on medieval military history.

I am just beginning to learn about medieval warfare.  What do you suggest I read?

Most of our articles on our website deal with particular topics, but I would recommend reading "The Myths of Medieval Warfare," by Sean McGlynn.  There are also many new books that are available at book stores, like Medieval Warfare, by Helen Nicholson, and Medieval Warfare: A History, edited by Maurice Keen.  You might also want to look at other websites, like Société de l'Oriflamme, which has very good information.

I would like to write an article or contribute something for the website.  Do you accept submissions?

Yes, we would be very happy to receive submissions.  Please contact Peter Konieczny, editor of the website, at deremilitari@hotmail.com
