Battle of Lincoln in 1141

Stephen, King of England, reigned from 1135 to 1154.  England was in a state of civil war, for most of his rule, as forces supporting Stephen fought against those who favoured the claim of Henry I's daughter Matilda.  One of the most important events in this war was the battle of Lincoln, fought on February 2, 1141, where Stephen was defeated and captured by Robert, Earl of Gloucester.  Here are five contemporary texts that offer their own description of the battle:

Gesta Stephani

Henry, archdeacon of Huntingdon

William of Malmesbury

Orderic Vitalis

The Chronicle of John of Worcester
